Cover Letter
Dear Hiring Committee,

While serving as a Youth Development Specialist with the United States Peace Corps, I held an officer position with our post's Gender and Development Committee, witnessing firsthand how the intersection of data and policy acts as a powerful force for progress. Through my background in Bioinformatics and Biology, I have seen data impact global health in real time, and I'm eager to continue developing as a Data Scientist, though now with policy-focused goals. I am therefore thrilled to apply for this Research Analyst position, knowing my work will shape consumer complaint analyses and policies.

I am currently working as a Computational Biology Extern with the Statistics and Algorithms group at Adaptive Biotechnologies in Seattle, Washington, and have been tasked with a wide array of data science projects, from machine learning to tool development. I have honed a number of core machine learning skills during the externship, notably the classifier I scripted to design and analyze a new clinical diagnostic, or the regression model I developed to assess the accuracy of one of the company's most lucrative clinical tests. The teams I work with are highly collaborative and interdisciplinary. I recently wrote a Python tool for research scientists that takes inconsistent Excel data, cleans it, and a returns an interpretable spreadsheet for widespread internal use. For my Master's capstone project, I worked with a small team to design a pipeline that assembled the first Sagebrush Lizard genome to a high degree of accuracy. This was a pride-inducing feat for our team, as this lizard species has known Lyme Disease immunity and is an object of fascination to the medical community.

Additionally, I have substantial experience in data exploration and visualization of biological data, which I believe puts me in a unique position to evaluate highly specialized datasets, and I'm eager to conduct analyses that I know will support current and future program operations. In addition to technical skill advancement, I am eager to continue my professional development through various mentorship opportunities with the CFPB. I look forward to discussing this position further with you.

Non-Competitive Eligibility is active through May 2021 if a hiring agency chooses to grant an extension for the eighteen months spent in graduate school.

Sincerely,
Cornell Boone

According to 83% of hiring managers, cover letters are an important part of every recruiter’s decision-making process.

What’s more, 72% of them will expect you to hand in a great cover letter, even if this part is listed as ‘optional’ on the job advert.

And if you ask our experts, cover letters are an amazing opportunity to tell a personal story and make the right first impression.

But what exactly is a cover letter and how to write a good one? Let’s see…

How to write the perfect junior data scientist cover letter

So what does a good cover letter look like?

Well, it’s written in a tone of voice that matches the specific company’s culture, and it’s not just a long-form resume. It’s also focused on making the right impression.

We advise you to talk about your achievements, goals, and motivations, rather than just plainly listing your skills and experience. Try to tell a personal story.

And if that’s not enough, we have some additional pro tips for you.

Choose the right salutation and craft a strong introduction

Choosing the right salutation might be tough – we get it. After all, you don’t want to sound way too formal or too friendly.

There are some things that should definitely be taken into consideration when it comes to addressing your cover letter. First and foremost comes the recruiter’s name.

Even if you don’t know who the person reading your cover letter might be, try to find out. Check company websites or social media profiles or even media articles.

If this doesn’t help, you can go for traditional gender-neutral salutations that don’t require knowing the hiring manager’s name.

Here are some of our favorites:

  • Dear Ms. Smith
  • Dear Peter Roberts
  • To the [company name] Recruitment Team
  • Dear Hiring Manager

We’ve all heard it – introductions are a big deal.

A good cover letter introduction can help you land an interview, while a bad introduction can ruin all your chances of getting your dream job as Junior Data Scientist.

So what are the things that can make your cover letter stand out? Honesty, excitement, and motivation.

Show your motivation and excitement to join the company in an honest way. And if you think that’d suit the company – share your vision with the recruiter. Tell them how you think being part of the team can help both parties grow.

Link your Junior Data Scientist soft and hard skills to your achievements

Listing hard skills on your resume is quite straightforward, isn’t it? But when it comes to writing a memorable Junior Data Scientist cover letter, you need to be a bit more creative.

The thing is, cover letters are designed to tell a story. To show the thought process behind your achievements and motivations. To put the recruiter in your shoes and allow them to get to know you better.

Maybe you want to share how you deal with challenges? Or what helps you reach your goals? It doesn’t really matter.

And while soft skills are important, hard skills shouldn’t be skipped either. Mentioning some hard skills (especially the ones listed by the recruiter) is always a great idea. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen documents for certain keywords.

Show that you've researched the company

Proving that you’re familiar with the company is a great way to win the recruiter’s heart. It shows that you’ve taken some time for research and that you’re attentive to detail.

What’s more, it will also help you find out the issues at hand. This way, you can link your own skills and qualifications to some potential challenges the company might have to deal with in the future.

Choose the right closing line

Ending your cover letter in an actionable way is one of the things that increase your chances of getting a callback.

The conclusion is also your opportunity to thank the recruiter for their time and consideration, so don’t skip that.

Just make sure to go for an ending that matches the company culture and language. If you prefer to be on the safe side, choose traditional closing lines such as “Looking forward to your reply”.
