DELOITE
Dear Hiring Manager,

I am very excited to apply for the Product Owner position in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Chicago. In addition to having several years of experience in customer service, product management & quality assurance, particularly in IT environments, I also have a knack for facilitating complex projects and can quickly learn the ins and outs of an organization. I look forward to presenting how my experience would be an excellent match for this position and your team.

Working with technology has brought me professional fulfillment because I really enjoy learning new technologies and managing projects that have significant impact on UX. One of my most rewarding roles has been as the QA Analyst and Product Support Team Lead at Packback, which is an education technology company that offers an AI based online discussion platform. I was originally hired on as a temporary support representative, but after 4 weeks of providing technical support to the organization, documenting and monitoring the timely resolution of defects and testing the platform to validate user expectations, I was promoted to be the sole QA Analyst for the product/development team. Several months later, I was promoted to also be the Product Support Team Lead where, in addition to leading a support team to consistently exceed all KPI metrics, I improved internal processes and workflows that resulted in key optimizations in UX and team efficiency, among many other notable contributions.

I’m also very passionate about sharing what I know with other people, which naturally requires excellent communication skills. At Packback, I gave many product training's to staff, wrote dozens of articles for the help center, and wrote macros for various support cases to make it easier for team members to respond to customers quickly and to ensure the Packback voice/brand was consistent across reps. I have an intensely curious and determined mindset and my desire to help others and whatever team I’m supporting is what sustains my work ethic. I’m confident that I would be able to provide the same level of performance and work ethic to Deloitte.

I hope that you may determine my skills and experience to be a great fit for your team. If you would like to discuss my experience and qualifications in more detail, please feel free to reach out. Thank you so much for your consideration thus far, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Miriam Kaufman

According to 83% of hiring managers, cover letters are an important part of every recruiter’s decision-making process.

What’s more, 72% of them will expect you to hand in a great cover letter, even if this part is listed as ‘optional’ on the job advert.

And if you ask our experts, cover letters are an amazing opportunity to tell a personal story and make the right first impression.

But what exactly is a cover letter and how to write a good one? Let’s see…

Professional Product Owner cover letter tips to help you stand out

Miriam Kaufman Cover Letter Example

First off, you need to remember that a cover letter should build upon the information in your resume, rather than just repeat it.

Second, make sure that the tone of voice you use matches the company culture.

And last but not least, try to convey your enthusiasm for the position and the field. This will give your text a personal touch.

But how can you make your cover letter grab every hiring manager's attention? Let’s see…

How to choose the most suitable salutation and make a good impression

In general, the salutation you use depends on the tone of voice you’ve decided to go for but also on the company culture.

However, it’s always a good idea to address your letter to the person responsible for the recruitment process. If you don’t know their name, try to find it out. And only if that proves to be impossible, choose a generic salutation.

Here are some phrases you can use (note that some of them require you to know the hiring manager's name):

  • To the [team you're applying for] Department
  • Dear Paul Black
  • Dear Hiring Manager
  • Dear Ms. Stone

The introduction of your Product Owner cover letter is what will get you remembered. But how can you make sure that your opening line is good enough?

Rumor has it, many people out there have started using phrases like “I found your job advert on website X and decided to apply” ever more often. But more importantly – that recruiters are already getting tired of it.

So instead of saying what everyone else is saying, we advise you to go for a more honest approach. Begin your cover letter by explaining what excites you about the company and how this excitement will help you on your journey towards success.

Link your Product Owner soft and hard skills to your achievements

While the resume is considered the best place to showcase your hard skills and achievements, the cover letter should tell a story and prove your enthusiasm for the field.

This is why we advise you to focus on soft skills and results. Think about all your soft skills and how they have helped you grow as a professional and crush your goals. Then turn this into your own very short success story.

Make sure to include some hard skills too, especially the ones listed as part of the requirements section of the job advert. This will guarantee that you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen applicant documents for keywords.

And remember – the cover letter should include new information without repeating your whole resume. It needs to offer additional value to the recruiter.

Show that you know the company and its problems well

Showing that you’ve researched the company and are familiar with it is a good way to prove your work-readiness.

It will also point the recruiter to the fact that your skills and qualifications will have a long-term impact on the company. Just link some of your strengths to the ways in which current or potential issues can be resolved.

Finish your cover letter with a call to action

Ending your Product Owner cover letter in a suitable way can help you land an interview. Why? Because strong endings portray applicants as considerate and, what’s even more important – passionate about the job.

Just make sure that your ending (just like your cover letter’s body) matches the company culture. If you prefer to be on the safe side, go for traditional closing lines such as “Looking forward to hearing from you”.
