Dear Mellisa Mills,

As an accomplished business professional, I was recently made aware 3M and yourself were seeking a new territory account representative for the Eastern DFW territory. In the next lines, I'll tell you little about myself and how I'll bring more positive leadership to your company.

For the last 9 years I have successfully led in the retail sector with Kohls. During this time I have developed key skills in relationship management with both customers and associates, territory development, and revenue generation at every level of my career. More over, my on the job sales experience has afforded me a well rounded skill set, including first-rate organization, client relationship retention and resolution techniques, and a passion to excel and exceed sales goals.

The following are what I consider the highlights of my career:
1) Running positive sales comps the last two fiscal years, while also generating over one million additional sales for the company in this time.
2) Implementing cultures and operational routines resulting in a top 30% store ranking twenty six consecutive  months in a row, and currently the number one store in the entire DFW district markets.
3) Earning store of the month two times in fiscal 2019 in addition to receiving store manager of the month twice for outstanding consistency and driving positive sales results and current company ranking of 173 out of 1160 stores nationwide.

In addition to my leadership experience, professional accomplishments, and company loyalty I have a solid educational background earning a minor in management and Bachelors in Marketing from the University of North Texas in 2011. My passion for customer service, customer retention, and sales expansion makes me extremely excited to seek out an opportunity with a prestigious company such as 3M. I not only feel that my leadership skills will help contribute but also help drive continued positive growth for your company.

Please review my attached resume for additional details regarding my expertise and career achievements. I look forward to hearing from you to discuss this opportunity and how I can contribute to your company's ongoing success.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

According to 83% of hiring managers, cover letters are an important part of every recruiter’s decision-making process.

What’s more, 72% of them will expect you to hand in a great cover letter, even if this part is listed as ‘optional’ on the job advert.

And if you ask our experts, cover letters are an amazing opportunity to tell a personal story and make the right first impression.

But what exactly is a cover letter and how to write a good one? Let’s see…

Make your sales representative cover letter stand out

By now you’ve probably learned that a well-written cover letter will complement your resume and increase your chances of getting the job.

It will also introduce the recruiter to your strengths and your capacity to handle challenges.

In short - it will make them want to learn more about you!

Check out our guide on what your cover letter should include for some additional inspiration.

Now it’s time to move on to what you actually came for – our professional tips and examples that will help you write a memorable cover letter and land an interview.

Stand out with a strong introduction and an appropriate salutation

Choosing the right salutation might be tough – we get it. After all, you don’t want to sound way too formal or too friendly.

There are some things that should definitely be taken into consideration when it comes to addressing your cover letter. First and foremost comes the recruiter’s name.

Even if you don’t know who the person reading your cover letter might be, try to find out. Check company websites or social media profiles or even media articles.

If this doesn’t help, you can go for traditional gender-neutral salutations that don’t require knowing the hiring manager’s name.

Here are some of our favorites:

  • To the Human Resources Department
  • Dear [company name] Recruiter
  • Dear Angela Stone
  • To the Recruitment Team

The introduction of your Sales Representative cover letter is without a doubt crucial for the first impression you’ll make as an applicant. But is there a way to make sure your opening line is good enough?

Yes, there is. You can start by sharing your enthusiasm for the job or the field (or why not both!). You could also share your reasons to find the company exciting.

Try to be original. Don’t go for phrases like “I want to apply for the position that I saw advertised on platform X”. They're outdated and sound like you’ve got nothing better to say

Link your hard and soft skills to your achievements

Although you’ve probably listed (or are planning to list) your hard skills on your resume, don’t forget to mention them in your cover letter as well. One way to do that is by telling a personal story.

You can share how some of your skills or qualities have helped you achieve goals in the past. Or perhaps you want to talk about the things that help you get over challenges. You decide.

Naturally, both soft and hard skills should be present here. It’s especially important to include skills and qualifications that have been mentioned as part of the job description or the requirements section of the advert. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems that screen documents for certain keywords.

Show how passionate you are to join the company

Proving that you are familiar with the company, its problems, and its goals is without a doubt one of the best ways to stand out.

If you want to show your passion for the company, mention how your skills and previous achievements can help the team grow.

It’s also worth mentioning how your experience can help resolve some of the most common industry issues.

End with a call to action

The last paragraph of your cover letter should briefly sum up the whole text. This is the time to express your motivation to get to the next step of the hiring process, but also your gratitude for the reader’s time and consideration.

You can be creative or use traditional closing lines here – it all depends on your preference and the company culture.
