Dear Monica Gracía,

I am sharing my interest in applying for the position of Account Manager Life Science, which I have learned about in LinkedIn. I believe this position would be perfect for me because of my background and interests.

I have been working in several research laboratories in different roles for 10 years altogether in Finland as well as abroad in Germany and in the USA, where I am currently located. During the years I've become an expert in laboratory work and management. I have a lot of hands-on experience and strong technical skills especially in qPCR and Western blot mainly using Bio-Rad products. I have a Master of Science degree with major in Biotechnology and a Biotechnology Laboratory Technician BASc degree (laboratorioanalyytikko, AMK in Finnish).

I really enjoy working in a changing and challenging environment. My experiences have not only honed my organizational capacity and time management, but have also developed my resilience to stress, analytical thinking, and solution-oriented approach. I am very precise by nature and have a strong attention to detail.

English has always been my main working language, since I've been working in international laboratories. My experiences have taught me a great deal about working with people from different backgrounds and cultures in diverse environments. I am very social and appreciate meeting new people, and I believe great teamwork is the key to success. I enjoy working both independently and in a team environment.

I have a lot of hands-on experience and knowledge in Bio-Rad products, and I can truly say that they are of very high quality. I would be privileged to promote and sell your products, because I know that they are the best in the market. My other asset in this job would be my many connections in Helsinki area especially at the University of Helsinki as well as in biotech companies. I am a fast learner who is not afraid of challenges. I would love to contribute my expertise to your team, I would truly enjoy the work.

Thank you for considering my application, I would appreciate the opportunity to continue this conversation further at an interview. I am happy to answer should you have any further questions and am happy to provide supporting documentation upon request. The best time to reach me is after 15.30 Finnish time because of the time difference.

I am very much looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Lindsey Orr

According to 83% of hiring managers, cover letters are an important part of every recruiter’s decision-making process.

What’s more, 72% of them will expect you to hand in a great cover letter, even if this part is listed as ‘optional’ on the job advert.

And if you ask our experts, cover letters are an amazing opportunity to tell a personal story and make the right first impression.

But what exactly is a cover letter and how to write a good one? Let’s see…

Professional Sales cover letter tips to help you stand out

At first, you may think that the cover letter should repeat all information from your resume but in a story-like form. However, that’s not true.

Instead of re-writing your resume, you need to focus on making the right impression.

You can do that by talking about the skills that help you overcome challenges, your excitement when it comes to the industry, your past achievements, and your knowledge of the company.

Now let’s look at some other things that will make your cover letter stand out.

We've made an in-depth guide on what should your cover letter include that you can check out!

How to choose the most suitable salutation and make a good impression

Choosing the right salutation might be tough – we get it. After all, you don’t want to sound way too formal or too friendly.

There are some things that should definitely be taken into consideration when it comes to addressing your cover letter. First and foremost comes the recruiter’s name.

Even if you don’t know who the person reading your cover letter might be, try to find out. Check company websites or social media profiles or even media articles.

If this doesn’t help, you can go for traditional gender-neutral salutations that don’t require knowing the hiring manager’s name.

Here are some of our favorites:

  • To the Human Resources Department
  • Dear [company name] Recruiter
  • Dear Angela Stone
  • To the Recruitment Team

Coming up with a good introduction is your chance to make the right impression and give the hiring manager a solid reason to remember you.

So instead of going for popular opening lines such as “I found your job advert on website X”, prove that you are actually passionate about the position. Share why you would like to grow in this field and what makes the company exciting.

Focus on your soft skills but don't forget about the hard skills too

When it comes to listing skills on a cover letter, there’s only one thing that could be said about it – do it in a well thought out way!

We mean, don’t just plainly list all your skills on your cover letter. Instead, link them to achievements and goals. Share how your expertise can add value to the team. Maybe even tell a personal story. It’s up to you.

Just make sure to include both soft and hard skills – especially the ones listed in the requirements section of the job advert. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems that screen documents for certain keywords.

Show how passionate you are to join the company

Proving that you are familiar with the company, its problems, and its goals is without a doubt one of the best ways to stand out.

If you want to show your passion for the company, mention how your skills and previous achievements can help the team grow.

It’s also worth mentioning how your experience can help resolve some of the most common industry issues.

Choose the right ending

While a strong introduction makes a great first impression, a confident, yet considerate conclusion is essentially what will get you a callback.

There are different ways to end your cover letter. But remember – the closing line you choose should match the company culture.

Your safest bet would be going for traditional phrases like “Looking forward to hearing from you” or “Looking forward to your reply”. For bonus points, add a simple “Thank you for your time and consideration”.
