All resume examples in this guide

Have I ever mentioned how I failed at my short stint as a leasing consultant in college?

No?

That’s because I was embarrassed.

Why?

Well, here is the short version:

As any other college student I was strapped for cash. My friend, Rhett convinced me leasing consultants make good earnings. So I gave it a go.

I admit - the commissions weren’t bad at all. And I could work part-time and over the weekends. I even skipped the resume process.

But… I grossly underestimated the amount of stamina and industry knowledge I had to have.

Especially as a computer science student. I couldn’t afford to invest more of my free time in market research.

As a result, I quit.

But Rhett continued on to be a very successful and happy leasing expert. That’s why I’ve asked him to share the ins and outs of writing a leasing consultant resume.

Take a look at what he had to share.

Here is How Our In-Depth Guide Going to Help You

  • Which resume formats are favored by hiring managers
  • Whether you should go for the resume objective or resume summary
  • How to properly frame the experience section so you appeal to recruiters
  • How to highlight your strengths, even if you’re switching careers
  • Which skills are currently trending in the job market
  • Which certification can make your leasing consultant resume pop

How to design the perfect leasing consultant resume

First on your writing agenda must be choosing the proper resume layout. Generally, you have three options:

The first one is by far the most popular resume format. And the most favored by recruiters.

Why?

Since it’s more commonly used, hiring managers are familiar with the layout. They can quickly skim through the information they need.

This resume format is best for candidates with more than 5 years of working experience. If you’re applying for a position as a:

  • Sales and Leasing Consultant
  • Senior Leasing Consultant
  • Facility Supervisor
  • Assistant Property Manager
  • Property Manager

…then this is your resume format.

When listing your past employers, go back no more than a decade. Make sure you show a clear career progression.

What about those with less experience?

If you’re:

  • Still new to the leasing consultant job market but want to switch jobs
  • Working as a leasing consultant on the side but want to make it a full-time gig
  • Changing your career path

…use the hybrid resume format.

This one provides a nice balance between work experience and qualifications. It gives you the opportunity to put an emphasis on your transferable skills.

Last but not least - the functional resume. If you:

  • Have no work history
  • Are a college grad looking for a job
  • Are seeking part time options

… this resume layout is your best option.

Why?

Since you have no practical experience to share, the format allows you to focus on your strengths.

Regardless of the layout, there are key pieces of real estate you must include in your resume.

Must-have sections for your leasing consultant resume:

  • A well-formatted header to list your basic contact information
  • A resume summary or objective to pitch yourself and feature your successes
  • A bulleted experience section to highlight the scope of your current responsibilities
  • A skills segment where you show equal parts of your technical and social talents
  • An education and certificates box to list your relevant qualifications

Consider this your floor plan. It’s time to fill it out!

What should your resume include?

Here are some of the important points you must take into account.

What recruiters look for in an outstanding resume:":

  • Are you personable and dependable?
  • Are you available to work on weekends and during holidays?
  • Are you good at assessing the needs of prospective residents?
  • Do you have experience in market research?
  • Can you multitask? Can you stay on top of leads, while inspecting houses?
  • How familiar are you with property and real estate legislation?
  • Do you know how to maintain model houses and organize viewing tours?
  • How good are you at nurturing relationships with existing tenants?
  • How do you generate interest in your community?

As you can see, there is plenty to think about. But it’s not impossible!

Read on as we discuss each section individually.

What does an appealing leasing consultant resume header look like?

Most importantly - it’s error-free!

As a busy professional you must be reachable. Both by recruiters and prospective residents alike.

Nothing kills a well-constructed resume like a typo. Or your chances at getting a callback like a missing piece of contact info.

Moreover, verify that you’ve listed your job title properly. Many make the mistake of sending out the same resume without tailoring it to the particular job ad.

Depending on your situation, you have two options. You can:

  • Go with your last held position, if you’ve been in the industry for a few years
  • Use a title relevant to the job ad, if you’re switching careers

Rhett graciously accepted to use his resume drafts in this guide.

2 leasing consultant resume header examples

Have a look at the following sample. Can you spot the mistakes.

Rhett Dean
Consultant
help@enhancv.com
Wichita, KS
WRONG

Immediately, Rhett’s ambiguous job title stands out. A consultant can work in a variety of fields and industries.

That being so, it’s not very clear if he’s searching for a job within the same business niche or not.

Also, Rhett has added only his email. Leasing consultants are always on the go. And if you rely on email alone, you miss out on many opportunities.

Here is an updated version of the resume header:

Rhett Dean
Sales and Leasing Consultant
+1-316-555-5555
help@enhancv.com
Wichita, KS
RIGHT

This one is much better - it even has a LinkedIn profile!

Why is this a big deal?

Adding a LinkedIn profile on your resume serves three purposes:

  • It gives extra information about your professional life
  • It provides a glimpse into your character. This is crucial when checking company culture compatibility.
  • It is yet another way to contact you for more information

Check out our article on how to frame your contact information in the header, if you need more tips.

How to stand out to recruiters with an extraordinary resume summary

Building your resume summary is much like trying to advertise a rental apartment.

You know there are a few dents here and there. The kitchen probably needs refurbishing. And the hall needs a new coat of paint.

But ultimately, you know a good apartment when you see one.

The same goes for your resume summary: this is your sales pitch. As such, it needs to leave a lasting impression with hiring managers.

Why?

Because this is your best and last chance to grab their attention.

With that in mind, let’s look at the two sample summaries Rhett provided.

2 Leasing Consultant Resume Summary Examples

Summary
Leasing Consultant with more than a decade of experience in the Wichita, KS, real estate market. Fluent in English and Spanish.
WRONG

Apart from not sounding very convincing, it’s a mediocre summary at best.

This is because:

  • The summary doesn’t say much for someone who’s been in the industry for more than ten years.
  • The job title also doesn’t suit someone who’s been in this business for a long time.
  • Lack of information - missing skills, credentials and certifications.

Indeed, being bilingual can open many doors. But if you can’t tell a well-rounded story and sell your other talents, you won’t go far.

Compare it to the following resume summary:

Summary
Experienced Leasing Consultant and Facility Supervisor of 12 years. Skilled in property management, community policies and ability to assess tenants' needs. Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and holder of a National Apartment Leasing Professional (NALP) certificate. Bilingual (English and Spanish).
RIGHT

Now this says a lot about the applicant!

Like any other job, being a leasing consultant means you do lots of tasks throughout the day.

So, you must show what motivates you to do your job. In this case, the candidate displays a very customer-oriented approach to work. As it’s demanded from the job.

The same goes for those with little to no experience in the field. If you’re:

  • a college grad
  • switching careers

…substitute this section with a resume objective.

What is this?

Essentially, it’s the same as the resume summary. But rather than talking about your work history, you’re basically saying:

“Hey, listen, I know I’m new to this. But I can help you with all sorts of things.”

Remember to focus on how you can be beneficial to your potential employer. Avoid talking about your personal gains.

To learn more about which sections you should concentrate on, read our article on how to write a resume with no work experience.

Modeling the experience section on your leasing consultant resume

Many underestimate this part of the resume. And most of the time, this is by far the largest piece of real estate on it.

A very common mistake when filling out your experience is to apply the to-do list approach.

Why is this a problem? Shouldn’t I list my previous responsibilities, I hear you ask.

Yes… and no.

There are two main reasons why you should avoid this method:

  • It makes the experience section look like the job requirements list in the ad
  • It doesn’t show your work contributions, which are your main selling point

The purpose of each entry is to show a clear career progression. And to portray you as a well-rounded individual who is involved with each aspect of the job.

2 leasing consultant resume experience examples

Take a look at the samples Rhett provided to see this in action.

Rhett Dean
Consultant
ABC Property Management
KS
Company Description
  • Staged model apartments
  • Used sales techniques
  • Renewed apartment leases
WRONG

The first one looks rushed and sloppy. There are a few key mistakes here:

  • Incomplete job title
  • Partial address
  • Missing company description
  • Lack of work achievements

Each individual error won’t cost you that much. Yet, when all are weighted together, the section looks half-baked at best.

Now, we’ve already discussed the job title and the contact information. But what about the company description? Why is it so important?

Well, it’s all about context.

Your accomplishments stand out that much more when viewed from the right angle.

You don’t have to go into too much detail. One sentence is enough.

Finally, when discussing your achievements - tie them to verifiable results. Measure your successes and lead with data.

But don’t stick to one particular professional facet. Display versatility. Talk about your relationship with customers, vendors, other team members, etc.

Boast about staying on top of your leads, while inspecting houses.

Considering all of this, check out the second sample:

Rhett Dean
Leasing Consultant and Facility Supervisor
ABC Property Management

  • Implemented new techniques for staging model apartments, which boosted prospective resident interest by 210%.

  • Improved apartment renewal rates by 70% for current leases by optimizing the communication process between community service vendors.
  • Introduced over 30 new properties to the company portfolio by helping the Property Manager during the selection and acquisition process.
RIGHT

Wouldn’t you want to hire this applicant right away?

It’s really a no-brainer!

The resume skills section: featuring the best of both worlds

Another rather tricky piece of resume real estate. But don’t worry, we have your back!

The reason this section stumps applicants is two-fold:

  • It’s difficult to talk about your talents and not feel the imposter syndrome
  • You have to link your skills to quantifiable results

Easier said than done.

Still, it is doable. All you have to remember is to balance your technical and social skills. You must demonstrate an ability to work well with both humans and computers.

Let’s review each of these separately.

Which technical skills are in high demand and how to list them

Generally, these are easier to tackle because the outcomes are visible.

Each piece of software has defined KPIs and outputs. While other processes can be immediately ticked off as “done” or “not done”.

Even so, don’t forget to attach your successes to business goals. After all, these are the decisive factors being considered by hiring managers.

Keeping that in mind, skim the table below. It includes the most popular technical talents employers are seeking.

How to flaunt your soft skills and show results at the same time

Your social skills define your work style and professional life.

Think about the way your work approach affects your job.

Are you empathetic towards prospective residents? Do you communicate well with vendors?

How well do you work with your colleagues?

While the results may not be as visible, they are there.

Here is how to put this into practice:

Strengths
Empathy
Increased satisfaction rates among the veteran tenants and tenants with disabilities, as a result of frequent volunteer work with local VA support groups.
Dependable
Reduced response time to tenant queries and concerns by 24 hours after automating several in-house processes.
Teamwork
Decreased the period between move-outs and move-ins by incorporating a new notification and collaboration system for the lease agents, property maintenance and housekeeping teams.
RIGHT

It doesn’t seem very difficult, does it?

To try this out:

  • Write down your social talents on a piece of paper
  • Go over the table below and see if you can add anything else
  • Provide a measurable outcome next to each skill

Most popular soft skills to have on your leasing consultant resume:

And you’re done with this section!

Other degrees you can include on your resume include:

  • BS in Business

Which certificates attract the attention of hiring managers?

Certificates ensure your work is up to industry standards. As such, it’s always a good idea to include them in your resume.

Just see that they are valid before listing them.

Is there anything else you can add to your resume?

Of course!

But before you bring other sections into the mix, take into account the space you have left. You don’t want your resume to be longer than a page.

Depending on how big this space is, you can attach any of the following sections:

The last one is a unique way to show what your work day looks like. This provides hints about:

  • How you divide and spend time at work
  • Whether you focus on particular duties. Or neglects others
  • If you have a nice work-life balance
