Dear Hiring Manager,
I'm truly glad that I've found this job opportunity as there is a clear match between my experience and the profile you are looking for. Let me explain below.

7 years as Director of Technology, working for a big and vibrant international company, have proven me as a passionate democratic/strategic leader fully accountable for the software development of the organization. An area where I was successful in understanding and defining the technology roadmap, not just for the division I was heading up, but also in collaboration with other divisions in London, Boston, Hong Kong and Bangalore.
Together we are stronger. Finding synergies with the Director of Marketing & Automation, Head of Product and Head of Sales as well as Technology Directors of other divisions have been fundamental for the successful growth of the division.

There is no great success without a great team. In that sense, I've managed several teams composed by Tech Leads, Scrum Master, Project Managers, BA, QA, DBA and Developers, which I've coached, mentored and developed to become better professionals.
Most of them based were in Bangalore in India, a city where I've enjoyed traveling up to 6x per year. Without doubt, this has been a fantastic and rich cultural exchange.

Data is "king". My most recent role as Director of Business Intelligence, have given me a great chance to apply all my technical experience to refine, enhance and boost the data integration of existing and new sources, towards a unique goal which is to provide accurate information in order to provide well informed decisions.
I would be delighted to get to know more about the position and to meet you and the team in person. I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to hearing from you!
Best regards,
Manuela Murphy

What’s the best thing about writing a Director of Software Development cover letter? You get to decide which parts of your experience need to be highlighted and which should better be skipped!

And what’s the thing that will make every hiring manager want to learn more about you? Mentioning the tools that have helped you overcome challenges and improve your skillset.

Let's look at our professional tips and examples that will help you write a memorable cover letter and land an interview.

So what’s the difference between a cover letter and a resume?

In short – the resume showcases your achievements and skills, while the cover letter focuses more on your personality and motivations.

Of course, you should mention some of your relevant skills in the cover letter as well. But make sure you’re not repeating your resume word by word.

Now let's move on to the things that make every cover letter great!

Use an appropriate salutation and write a powerful introduction

Choosing the right salutation for your cover letter is crucial – after all, it’s the first thing the hiring manager will read.

For this reason, we’ve gathered several classic salutations. Note that some of them could be used even if you don't know the hiring manager's name.

  • Dear Mr. James
  • Dear Human Resources Manager
  • To the [team you're applying for] Department
  • Dear [company name] Recruiter

The introduction of your Director of Software Development cover letter is without a doubt crucial for the first impression you’ll make as an applicant. But is there a way to make sure your opening line is good enough?

Yes, there is. You can start by sharing your enthusiasm for the job or the field (or why not both!). You could also share your reasons to find the company exciting.

Try to be original. Don’t go for phrases like “I want to apply for the position that I saw advertised on platform X”. They're outdated and sound like you’ve got nothing better to say

Don't skip on your Director of Software Development soft and hard skills

Listing hard skills on your resume is quite straightforward, isn’t it? But when it comes to writing a memorable Director of Software Development cover letter, you need to be a bit more creative.

The thing is, cover letters are designed to tell a story. To show the thought process behind your achievements and motivations. To put the recruiter in your shoes and allow them to get to know you better.

Maybe you want to share how you deal with challenges? Or what helps you reach your goals? It doesn’t really matter.

And while soft skills are important, hard skills shouldn’t be skipped either. Mentioning some hard skills (especially the ones listed by the recruiter) is always a great idea. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen documents for certain keywords.

Show how passionate you are to join the company

Adding a line or two about the company can help you prove your excitement and readiness to become a valuable team member.

You might also choose to link your previous work-related tasks and achievements to current industry or even company issues and how you think they can be resolved.

Go for an actionable ending

While a strong introduction makes a great first impression, a confident, yet considerate conclusion is essentially what will get you a callback.

There are different ways to end your cover letter. But remember – the closing line you choose should match the company culture.

Your safest bet would be going for traditional phrases like “Looking forward to hearing from you” or “Looking forward to your reply”. For bonus points, add a simple “Thank you for your time and consideration”.
