To My Partners In Education,

My name is Britney Johnson. I am applying for the position of School Counselor for Howdy Elementary in the Texas Elementary School District. I recently discovered this position while browsing job openings on your district website. My education and strong interpersonal skills make me an exceptional candidate for this position.

I graduated from Howdy University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a minor in Psychology. I have completed special training in child psychology and mediation skills. I have extensive experience working with children. I am committed to the success and personal growth of each student.

The world finds itself amid a very turbulent time. Everyday life has become a stressful experience for all, especially children. We often underestimate the trauma children experience throughout their childhood. During my undergraduate education, I learned to help children find healthy ways to learn proper communication skills, express empathy, and process the trauma they’ve endured.

Students in school face more social and emotional stresses than ever before. Without a trusted, skilled adult present to assist, these students can experience stress which impacts their education.

My open-mindedness and passion for helping these students make me the ideal candidate for this position. I can teach proper ethics, understanding, and general communication through one-on-one work or peer mediation.

A school cannot properly function if students have no place to feel safe to be themselves. Hiring a highly-qualified school counselor is the first step in providing the best environment for all. My emotional stability and passion for student success will contribute to the learning environment every student deserves at school.

I am eager to provide these services to Howdy Elementary School and can start as soon as possible. You can reach me at the phone number and email address provided above.

Thank you for your time,

Britney Johnson

Make your School Counselor cover letter stand out

By now you’ve probably learned that a well-written cover letter will complement your resume and increase your chances of getting the job.

It will also introduce the recruiter to your strengths and your capacity to handle challenges.

In short - it will make them want to learn more about you!

Check out our guide on how to write a cover letter like a pro for some additional inspiration.

Now it’s time to move on to what you actually came for – our professional tips and examples that will help you write a memorable cover letter and land an interview.

How to choose the most suitable salutation and make a good impression

It’s always better to address your cover letter to a specific person. This shows that you’ve taken the time to research who the hiring manager might be and that you’re attentive to detail.

However, in case you don’t know the recruiter’s name, you can go for traditional gender-neutral salutations.

Here are some of our suggestions:

  • Dear [company name] Recruiter,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. Smith,
  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • To the [team you're applying for] Team \

A noteworthy introduction is what will grab the reader by the collar and make them want to get to know you better.

But what’s the best way to begin your cover letter? Highlighting your excitement about the position!

Be honest and original – this will get you remembered. You can even link your excitement to the reasons why you’d like to grow in this exact field.

Focus on your soft skills but don't forget about the hard skills too

Although you’ve probably listed all your skills on your resume, it’s worth mentioning them again, but by telling a personal story. Focusing on your soft skills and leaving most hard ones behind is also a good idea.

Maybe you want to mention the things that help you overcome setbacks? Or the things that help you reach your goals? It doesn’t really matter what you choose, as long as you link it back to the specific job requirements.

Naturally, if the job advert mentions some hard skills explicitly, you should do the same in your cover letter. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen resumes and cover letters for certain keywords.

Show that you've researched the company

Every recruiter wants to know whether you’ve decided to apply because you’re familiar with the company or because their job advert was the first thing you saw this morning.

So – show that you’ve researched the company and are aware of its strengths, weaknesses, and potential problems.

In addition, you can also share how your School Counselor skills can add value to the team.

End with a call to action

By now you’ve managed to make a good impression on the hiring manager, and it’s important not to ruin it. That’s why you need to end your cover letter just as well as you wrote the body.

But what are the things that make up a memorable closing line? Expressing gratitude for the reader’s time and consideration, and saying that you look forward to their reply, to name a couple.

You can stick to traditional phrases (e.g. Looking forward to hearing from you soon) if you wish to be on the safe side. Just make sure that the language you use matches the company culture.
