Enhancv surveyed 600 job seekers and analyzed 26,192 user-generated resumes to assess the adoption of AI and opinions on its use.

Men are 35% more likely than women to use AI to write their resume

Overall, 49% of survey respondents admitted to using AI to write their resume. However, men were significantly more likely than women to do so.

  • 61% of men said they’d used AI to write their resume compared to 45% of women.

This is backed up by data from a November 2023 LinkedIn report which states that conversations on AI on the platform are driven by men, spurring 58% of discussions.

Enhancv’s Executive Coach, Silvia Angeloro, suggests there are are a number of reasons for this:

Higher representation in tech

Men are more likely to work in tech-related fields, making them more familiar with and open to using AI tools in their job search.

Risk-taking behavior

Men may be more willing to experiment with unproven methods and technologies, including AI, to gain a competitive edge in the job market.

Access and awareness

Men may have greater access to information and resources about AI tools, leading to higher usage.

Additionally, Angeloro suggested traditional gender divisions are at play.

I believe a significant reason for this disparity is that, on average, men tend to have fewer responsibilities related to childcare and household chores. This allows them to focus more on their careers and excel in areas such as leveraging AI for job applications, statistically more than women.

Have you used AI to write your resume?

Men aren’t just more likely to use AI when looking for a new job. They’re more comfortable using it as well.

  • 74% of men said they were either comfortable or very comfortable using AI vs. 60% of women

Are you comfortable with using AI during your job search?

Men and women are equally likely to believe using AI during a job search is ethical

Women seem to be less likely to use AI to boost their chances of success, but this isn’t due to any moral concerns. A significant majority of both genders believe it’s ethical to use AI during a job search.

81% of men and 80% of women believe it’s ethical for job seekers to use AI.

Angeloro backs up the majority view that AI is ethical and indeed useful to the job search process, but with some caveats:

“For job search strategy, I say yes to leveraging AI in every way possible, together with networking and reaching out directly to people via LinkedIn and other platforms.”

“For job applications, Leverage AI to enhance your application content. Start by listing everything you feel is crucial for the application on a piece of paper or your computer, focusing on bypassing ATS with keywords from the job posting and presenting evidence with metrics, numbers, percentages, timelines, etc. Create the content, then use AI to refine and improve it.”

But she also emphasizes a personal touch is essential.

Even after using AI, review and personalize your application to ensure it reflects your unique qualities. Remember, the goal is to showcase your fit for the role and let your individuality stand out. As a quantum physics type of executive coach, as I refer to myself, I believe you can only find what is meant for you if you’re letting your true self shine through, at least a little, after having sold yourself the way they want to hear it.

Workers in the IT, and Professional and Business Services sectors are the most likely to use AI

Enhancv analyzed a sample of 26,192 users to examine their use of AI during recruitment processes.

  • 8,108 users in the sample used Enhancv’s built-in AI tools when writing their resume.
  • Of those users, 3,080 worked in Professional and Business Services, and 2,367 worked in IT.

Again, 2023 data from LinkedIn supports this analysis, with 29% of conversations on the platform being driven by professional services, with tech coming in second at 17%.

Notably blue collar jobs were underrepresented when it came to AI use.

  • 234 Retail workers used AI to write their resume.
  • 36 Manufacturing workers used AI.
  • 7 Transportation and Warehousing workers used AI.
  • 4 government workers used AI.

Job seeker use of AI by industry

California and Texas are hotspots for job seeker AI use

California and Texas had the highest number of AI users amongst Enhancv subscribers. 795 and 519 users respectively. Apart from having high populations, both states are home to major tech hubs.

Google trends data backs this up, with both California and Texas showing strong interest in the search term “AI resume” compared to other states.

Older workers and younger workers are just as likely to use AI to write their resumes

Stereotypically, older workers are seen as being less comfortable with technology. Not so when it comes to carrying out an AI-assisted job search.

45% of survey respondents aged 50–59 said they’d used AI to write their resume. Exactly the same percentage as those aged 20–29.

Methodology

Survey data was obtained from a survey created by Enhancv.com and conducted using the online survey platform, Clickworker. It was completed on June 16, 2024. Overall, 600 people completed the survey.

Additional information was collected by analyzing aggregated anonymized data from users of Enhancv’s resume builder. 26,192 users were analyzed to examine their use of Enhancv’s proprietary AI tools while writing their resume.
