What is resume translation?

Resume translation is a one-click feature that automatically and accurately converts your resume to a language of your choosing. Translation handles the language — Enhancv's localization layer handles the rest: whether a photo is required, how long the document should be, and what details local employers expect.

Just pick a language and let Enhancv do the rest. You'll know exactly what the job market conventions are, and our AI assistant helps you tailor your application even further. It's free to start, formatting stays intact, and the result is yours to edit.

30languages Enhancv translates and localizes between — from or to English, in both directions.
25%longer documents when translating English into German or Spanish. Your layout absorbs the growth automatically.
5 daysis what a human translation service takes per resume, at $18–40 a page. Enhancv does it in seconds.

Localization is more than translation

Translation software tools are good only for that. They can't adapt your American resume for the German job market — and a local recruiter sees it instantly, realizing you've never applied to this market before. Enhancv gives you all the necessary localization, so your document becomes fully adapted to the target job market.

How to translate your resume in 4 steps

From or to English, Enhancv works in both directions.

Pick the target country, not just the language — where you're applying shapes the photo, the length, the dates, and the personal details on the page.

  1. Build your resume in a preferred language

Upload your existing resume to Enhancv, or write one from scratch in the builder.

  2. Pick the target language

Choose from 30 languages. The specific country you're applying to has its own resume conventions — Enhancv applies them for you and flags what to double-check.

  3. Review your localized draft

Make sure job titles, credentials, and other details are properly adapted. If you have questions about localization, the AI Assistant gives you a precise answer.

  4. Export and send with confidence

Your formatting stays intact and ATS-safe. Enhancv gives you all the right tools to localize your resume and land interviews.

Your resume formatting is preserved across translation and localization

Copy and paste your resume into a general-purpose translation tool and you get translated text with the formatting stripped out. Sections, columns, spacing, fonts, and colors — gone. You're left pasting everything back into your original document by hand, risking your layout depending on the file format.

Enhancv translates your content right there on the page. Your template, layout, and formatting adjust automatically to fit the changes in text, keeping your resume readable and ATS-compliant.

This matters more than you realize. Translated into German or Spanish, an English document runs 15 to 25% longer — words carry more syllables and sentences run longer. That can push a tidy one-page application onto an awkward, empty-looking second page. Enhancv gives you full control over layout and formatting, so you can readjust your text to fit perfectly.

Job titles and credentials that make sense locally

Most of the damage in translated resumes comes from literal, word-for-word translation — and it's most detrimental in your job titles and educational degrees.

Enhancv maps titles, degrees, and credentials to their actual local equivalents, then suggests how to adapt your application. You accept or reject each suggestion.

  • A literal tool returns

    “Célibataire des Arts”

    What it should say

    “Licence en Lettres”

Translated literally into French, “Bachelor of Arts” reads as bachelor in the sense of unmarried.

  • A literal tool returns

    “strong formation in marketing”

    What it should say

    “solid training in marketing”

The French “formation” means training. Translated word for word, it describes the shape of something instead.

  • A literal tool returns

    “I assist meetings”

    What it should say

    “I attend meetings”

French “assister à” means to attend — one of the false friends that creeps in whichever direction you translate.

Some credentials have no equivalent to swap in

A Project Leader sits above or below a Project Manager depending on the country, a UK 2:1 means nothing to a US recruiter, and a German “Ausbildung” has no clear US equivalent — they need explaining, not just translating.

Human translator, Google Translate, or Enhancv?

We're honest about the alternatives — you've probably tried at least one of them first.

In some cases you do need a certified human translator — for legally binding documents like diplomas or immigration papers. A job resume doesn't fall into that category. Employers don't take the time to verify every resume they receive, so optimize for speed, not certification.

Translate and localize your resume or CV into 30 languages

From or to English, Enhancv works in both directions. These four markets come up most — the rest work the same way.

  • English

The words are the easy part

Translating a resume built for your domestic market into English is straightforward. What candidates get wrong are the local conventions — photos, dates, personal details — and Enhancv flags each one before you send the application.

  • Spanish

    Even the document's name changes

It's a CV in Spain, but “hoja de vida” is more common across Ecuador, Colombia, and the rest of Latin America. Most of these markets expect an application with a photo.

  • German

The Lebenslauf is the real test

The sharpest contrast to a US resume: it's usually tabular, and often dated and signed at the bottom. Enhancv produces both — which makes it a good way to tell whether a translation tool understands localization at all, or only language.

  • French

Where literal translation does the most damage

Word-for-word translation from and to French is notoriously unreliable — every mistranslation shown earlier on this page is French. Localizing, not translating, is what keeps a French CV readable.

Why use Enhancv's Resume Translator

Translation and localization happen in the same pass: pick the target country, and the document comes back ready to send.

  • One click, 30 languages. Translated in place — no copying between tools and back again.
  • Localized, not just translated. Photo, length, dates, and personal details follow the target country.
  • Your layout survives. Formatting absorbs the new text length and stays ATS-safe.
  • Titles and degrees get mapped. Local equivalents, with every suggestion yours to accept or reject.
  • Yours to edit afterwards. It opens in the builder like any other resume.

Translate My Resume

Frequently asked questions about resume translation and localization

What is resume translation?

Resume translation is the proper conversion of a resume from one language to another. Just as importantly, a resume also needs to be localized — meeting the target country's job market conventions and employer expectations, from photo and length to dates and personal details.

How do I translate my resume?

After uploading your existing resume to Enhancv — or building it from scratch in your preferred language — go to the translate option. Choose the language you want to translate your resume into, then work through the localization suggestions. If you have any specific questions about localization, ask Enhancv's AI Assistant and it will give you a precise answer.

Can I just use Google Translate or ChatGPT to translate my resume?

These tools are good at translating text, and ChatGPT will do a decent job with localization conventions if you prompt it to. But they're not specialized resume builders — their usefulness is limited to the text alone. They don't support resume style, formatting, layout, fonts, colors, or photos. You'll have to handle all of that manually and make sure your file stays ATS-friendly.

Enhancv handles all of it for you, always ensuring your file is readable and ATS-compliant.

Will my resume formatting stay intact after translation?

Yes. The translation happens automatically, right there in the builder, and your template, layout, and formatting are preserved. Even if the translated text takes more or less space on the page, the builder factors that in and recalibrates. Enhancv's guardrails also ensure your resume parses cleanly when it goes through an ATS.

Does resume mean CV? Is there a difference?

Technically, there's a difference. In academia, a CV is the full education, qualification, and work history of an individual. In the context of job markets, though, "resume" and "CV" are used interchangeably around the world — the USA and Canada say "resume," while the UK, Ireland, and most of Europe say "CV."

Is a translated resume the same as a localized one?

No. A translated resume simply says the same things in another language. A localized resume is specifically adapted to meet the job market conventions of the country where you're applying — so your application meets the expectations of local recruiters, and they can seriously consider you for the role instead of doubting your competence.

Do I need a certified translation of my resume?

Almost never for a job application. Certain documents — legal or immigration paperwork, diplomas — do require certified translation, but a job resume doesn't fall into that category. Employers don't take the time to verify every resume they receive, and recruiters are good at spotting inconsistencies on their own. Optimize for speed, not verification.

Which languages can I translate my resume into?

Enhancv supports 30 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Romanian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Norwegian, Finnish, Greek, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Filipino, Indonesian, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. You can localize your resume to any country, ensuring your application is well received.

Is my data safe? Will you use my resume to train AI models?

Your data is encrypted, and we don't use your resumes to train AI models.

Will my translated resume be flagged as AI-generated?

Good question and a valid concern. As a vendor whose core product uses AI, we've researched this question extensively: ATS software doesn't flag AI-generated resumes in any capacity. Not because it can't be built to, but because it's not needed — the software layer of the application process doesn't concern itself with this.

Recruiters and employers do care about the authenticity and level of effort shown in a resume. Using AI as a drafting and translation tool isn't a problem — it's the baseline. Take the time to draft a genuine resume with a compelling career narrative and you'll be taken seriously.

Is resume translation free?

The Enhancv free plan lasts 7 days, and during that period you have access to most features, including resume translation. After that, you'd switch to a paid plan.

Can I edit the translated resume afterward?

Yes. The translated resume isn't exported right away — the changes are applied in the live editor, where you can see everything and keep tweaking. When you're happy with the final version, export your resume as a PDF and send it.
