Steve Jobs's photo

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs’ CEO resume shows not just what he’d accomplished and was proud of when he rejoined Apple in 1996, but how his struggles and failures turned him into the person who could save the company.

Life projects

Jobs’ work up to 1996 shows both his tremendous skills and his deep flaws. In each role, he changes the way things are done and leaves and impact. Of course, he leaves the bigger lessons for the section on his struggles.

Jobs turned a small division of Lucasfilm into a powerhouse studio, leading the company while it created the groundbreaking film Toy Story.

As CEO of NeXT, Jobs led the creation of the revolutionary UNix-based NeXTSTEP OS. In doing so, they created computers that were five years ahead of their time.

Jobs built Apple into the second biggest manufacturer of small computers by pushing technologies like a Graphical User Interface, mouse, and fanless designs, culminating in one of the most successful IPOs of all time.

Struggles I learned from

Dropping out of college

Jobs dropped out of a college his parents couldn’t afford but discovered he could learn in other ways

Launching failed products

The Lisa and Macintosh taught him the danger of releasing technically advanced products that are essentially still prototypes and don’t adequately solve user needs

Failing to identify a customer

The NeXt team never figured out who the customer was for the NeXT computer because Jobs didn’t adequately learn the lessons of Lisa and Macintosh

His typical day

Obsessing over design
Taking long walks
Thinking about the next “one more thing”
Meditations
Fasting and trying out diets
Checking out what Xerox PARC is up to these days
