Why is this a great sales resume?
Joshua is an ambitious young professional who loves getting out of the comfort zone. He also loves innovative technology and new ways of doing things. Which is why he decided to change his Word resume to a more “millennial-worthy resume without the cheap, non-applicable templates,” as he puts it.
Here’s what makes Joshua’s sales resume effective.
1. He leverages his non-traditional sales experience
Even though Joshua had never had a sales job per se, he manages to pinpoint everything that suggests he’d be quite good at it. That especially counts for his experience section, where he manages to mention all the skills necessary for a future sales job. These include attending sales conference calls, building relationships, removing sales barriers, etc. The lesson here is, even if you’ve never had a job in the field you’re applying in now, it doesn’t mean you don’t have the right skills for the position.
Tip: Think about your career and write down all your activities and responsibilities. Take out the ones that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for and include tangible data on each bullets. E.g. “Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z].”
2. He shows passion
Even though you can’t see a “passions” section on this resume, it’s clear what his passions are. The Summary section shows them particularly well. He manages to say so much in a few sentences - his passion, experience, and objective all come through. Another section we can see passion is the “Projects’ one. As he dreamt of working in tech, he shows that he knows the industry well by telling potential employer about two tech startups he founded/co-founded. He also points out the sales skills he acquired - negotiation and communication.
Tip: Use Summary section in your resume to answer the “tell me about yourself” question for your potential employer. Use Joshoua’s example as an inspiration and choose the keywords relevant to the job you’re applying for. If you feel mentioning your passions might come across as childish, show it through the side projects section.
3. He keeps it short and conscience
Even though we believe a one page resume isn’t right for every position and industry out there, in Joshua’s case it works quite well. His aim is to show the most relevant experience and skills for the job, and he managed to fit this in a single page. As he was applying to more conservative companies, he kept the layout of his resume quite simple - he didn’t use any visual elements and kept the colors and background minimalistic. Still, his resume has enough white space to make it easy to read.
Tip: Joshua’s advice is: “Find different ways to stand out and truly be an expert in your field. Enhancv will get you the call, [and then] it’s your job to blow them away with your story [at an interview].”
