You’ve got an eye for details, and you’re able to find the most minute issues in financial statements.

Your attention to detail can be both a blessing and a curse because you can be your own worst critic.Maybe you feel that your own auditor resume doesn’t match up to others in your field or you’re having a hard time quantifying your achievements.

If that’s the case, I’d like you to first take a deep breath. We’re here to help you write a stunning resume which will wow a hiring manager. We’ll provide you with an auditor resume example, as well as a step-by-step guide for each important section of your resume.

Choose the best format for your auditor's resume

As an internal auditor, I’m sure you can appreciate when people put in the homework to test their products. At Enhancv, we’ve done a study where we’ve compared Microsoft Office resume templates against our modern templates on different Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software. We’ve found that our resumes performed better than those built in Microsoft Office.

We’ve also learned that ATS formatting is a lot about fool proofing your resume by removing grammar and spelling issues. Here are some other tips for formatting your resume:

  • Length/Columns: Both single column and double column resumes work, but the best resumes are two columns condensed to one page.
  • Section Headings: Section headings are actually scanned in ATS software, so if you’re writing an Experience section, make sure to only include your experience in it.
  • Colors and Design: Although ATS software doesn’t scan for colors, including creative and tasteful colors and graphics can help to catch the eye of a potential manager.
  • Fonts: You don’t have to stick with boring old Times New Roman or Calibri. ATS software can actually read all Google fonts.
  • File Format: The best file format to use is the PDF format, as it does a better job of keeping writing and images in place when compared to Word. It’s also scannable by ATS.

Choose a reverse chronological format to list your most recent experience first.

In addition, if you’re entering a new field, are in a creative field, or have a wide variety in your experience, you may wish to use a hybrid resume format. Hybrid resumes usually place experience and skills side-by-side in two equal columns.

If you are brand new to the auditing field, highlight your mathematical skills, your proficiency in programming, and your knowledge of how to assess financial statements.

Add your contact information in the resume header

Did you know that your contact information is actually scanned by ATS software? That’s why it’s important to check your resume header for spelling, grammar, and other issues.

Below, you can find a list of all the things to include in your resume header:

  • Your first and last name
  • Your title
  • Your phone number
  • Your email address
  • Your location
  • Relevant social media handles (optional)

Create an interesting auditor resume summary

Your resume summary is essentially an elevator pitch, a short, succinct description of why you feel you will be a good fit at the auditor firm that you’re applying for. Creating a resume summary is also important for ATS, as you can include specific keywords from the job description in your resume summary. A good resume summary is an interesting read which catches the attention of a potential hiring manager.

Below, you can find a list of the most important things to include in a resume summary:

  • Your title and years of experience
  • Your most relevant skills in your field
  • Your top 1 to 2 professional achievements
Summary

Feature a standout auditor experience section

As somebody who studies financial records, you know just how important it is to quantify any statement that you make. This is also true when you’re creating an eye-catching experience section, as you should back up each one of your claims with numbers that show your worth.

Below, you will find a checklist of the most important things to include on a resume experience section:

  • Reverse chronological order: As mentioned above, always list your most recent experience first. That way, the hiring manager can spy your whole career trajectory, from where you started out to where you are today.
  • Job title: Include a job title for each experience item, and make sure that the job title is one that’s easily recognizable by people within your industry.
  • Company’s name, location, and description: Always be sure to include the company’s name and location, especially if you work in a multinational corporation which has many offices spread throughout the world.
  • Date of employment: Include both the month and the year, as this is important for ATS scanning software.
  • Achievements and responsibilities: In any job, you have a bunch of different responsibilities that may fall outside a general job description of your role. Be sure to include only the most important and pertinent responsibilities.
  • Action verbs: Begin every experience section with an action verb, like initiated, spearheaded, pioneered, or cultivated.
  • Include keywords: Your experience section is a great place to include keywords which could be scanned by ATS software. The best way to find keywords is to search through the job description.

Below, you will find a checklist with the most important things to include in an education section:

  • Degree Name
  • University, college, or other institution
  • Location (optional)
  • Years attended
  • GPA
  • Include academic achievements if you have less experience in the field

If you look at the last point above, it should be noted that if you already have a lot of experience in the field, you may just want to include a synopsis of your education. Alternatively, if you’re entering the field, list how you made the Dean’s list. You may also wish to include some projects that you worked on in your undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Below, you can find a simple example of how to list your education on a resume:

List your relevant auditor skills

From data analysis to understanding risk-management assessments, you have a lot of unique skills that make you a great auditor. In order to do that, list both your soft (people) skills and your hard (technical) skills. Both soft and technical skills have benefits with ATS software, as ATS scans for specific keywords which are listed as skills.

Technical skills

Technical skills are easy to quantify, as you can include facts, figures, and real-life examples of how you increased your ability in certain skills. Technical skills are also specific to the field which you are in. Any programming languages you learned to conduct data analysis reports are great to list in your technical skills section. In addition, you may choose to list:

Top 3 technical skills for auditors:

  • Data analysis skills: Proficiency in tools like Excel spreadsheets, Access, and SQL
  • Accounting knowledge: You should be proficient with the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Risk assessment skills: You should be able to assess audit findings and provide internal and external managers with everything they need to make an informed decision

Soft skills

Often overlooked in a technical field, like that of a senior internal auditor, soft skills are important people skills which can determine how well someone will work in a group environment. Although more difficult to quantify, do your best to give authentic examples from your previous work experience that show your proficiency in the skill.

Top 4 soft skills for auditors:

  • Ethical behavior
  • Analytical thinking
  • Adaptability
  • Communication skills
Strengths
Skill 1: Ethical behavior
Auditors need to maintain impartiality and subjectiveness in their role, so they cannot skew the data on audit reports to make it more favorable.
Skill 2: Analytical thinking
Auditors should use critical thinking when conducting financial audits and assessing risks.
Skill 3: Adaptability
Throughout the year, an internal auditor may conduct many audit programs, especially during tax season.
RIGHT

Include your auditor certificates

In the auditor field, there are many certificates which can be earned that can give you a distinct edge in the hiring process. Here’s what to include when listing certificates on your resume:

  • Certificate name
  • Name of issuer
  • Year of obtainment
  • Location (if applicable)
  • Date of expiration (if applicable)
  • Expected date of obtainment (if applicable)

Top 3 auditor certificates for your resume:

  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)

Use other relevant sections to make your resume stand out

For specialized resumes, like a manager resume, include a “Day of My Life/My Time” section. If you want to check one out, look at Marissa Mayer’s resume. We’ve actually found that, although ATS software doesn’t read this section, a personal section like this may actually help to show a hiring manager whether you are a good fit at a company.

Some of the most popular additional resume sections for an auditor resume include:

  • Membership of professional associations: In many ways, professional associations are the gatekeepers for the financial field, and being involved with one can actually open up lots of doors for you and your career.
  • Publications: If you have written any peer-reviewed journal articles, you might also want to include that because it can show that you are a thought leader in the auditor field.
  • Language Skills: In certain parts of the world, being bilingual can actually give you a leg up in your career. Be sure to list your proficiency in a language (written, verbal, native spoken level), and don’t over-exaggerate your skills.
  • Awards: If you’ve received any awards from the company that you work for, include them as well.

Create a matching cover letter for your auditor resume

Cover letters are great because they let you share a bit more about who you are and why you’d be a good fit for the company that you’re applying for. Here are some important things to include in your cover letter:

  • Contact information that corresponds with your resume.
  • Greeting.
  • Achievements in the first paragraph.
  • Cover letter body:
    • Work experience
    • Skills
    • Why you’d be a good fit
  • Call to action
